The Futile Podcast

Deconstructing 80's & 90's action movies. Relating them to comics, TV, and cartoons from then and now.

The Monkey’s guy comes in … he’s a rape enthusiast

podcast 8c

We talk about Sam Peckinpah, violence (esspecially the use of practical special effects to convery visera more viserally) and his film Straw Dogs. This is where we discuss consequences of violence as they relate to masculine interactions and male/female interactions and the inevitable misogyny that results. We talk about the bad guy in Tron (David Warner not Moses from South Park) as a mentally retarded character who in a Of Mice and Menesquescenario kills a girl. It’s kind of hard to explain but it gets pretty dark and heavy. Zack is a Peckinpah expert so it’s a good conversation … even though it sounds like it was recorded in Cheyenne Mountain.

"Come on Jack you anti-hero." – Kuato

podcast 8b

Blue Velvet inspires a Dean Stockwell v. Dan Hedeya (OR Al v. Carla’s ex-husband) aside; then
we discuss the seminal revisionist Western Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven. I talk about my first impressions of the film and what I think about the political subtext and the nature of small now fascism v. sociopath reformed killer of men. My Dialectic process of starting with one opinion and then “caving” into another is tested as I try my best to defend Gene Hackman’s character. Hell I’m a bit of a”contrarian” and playing Devil Advocate is why I’m in this podcast game . . . even though I hate pinball (Oh, will the contradictions never cease).

The NORAD sessions pt. 1

Podcast 8a

In these next few podcasts, which I lovingly refer to as the NORAD sessions (due mainly to the fact that for some reason I have yet to discern the audio sounds like we were recording it in some bunker full of computers in a cave), we discuss revisionist Westerns and the concept of the anti-hero. In this first part I give my review of The Proposition and compare it to Jim Jarmusch’s Deadman. Then I briefly talk about Cannibal: The Musical which had Stan Brakhage in it … it’s all very strange.

AFI 100 and Ian’s movie illiteracy.

podcast 7

In this one we talk about TV nostalgia and if Cheers is a good show or not? A: yes. Then Zack reads off the AFI top 100 and I realize how few I’ve seen (something which I’ve remedied a bit since recording). There’s not much more to it than this but we do discuss a few of what are considered to be the best American movies around; good times. illiteracy

SAW [s] review

Or so I’ve been told by our guest Seth (he’s my brother and he the one that does the theme music for the show). In this one Seth and I review SAW I and II and then III. We discuss how SAW II is like The Godfdather II or Return of the Jedi and we talk about the evolution of the SAW films as they relate to industrialization, the information age, and the post-modern depression of the soul. I think the hobo was named Obi but I’m not sure.

The Only "Good Guy" Dies.

Podcast 6

In this hefty one Zack does a quick review of The Proposition (2005) (which we will return to in a later podcast). Then we discuss Alan Moore’s Watchmen comic series. It’s my first time reading this seminal work and I have some pretty heated opinions about Moore and the lesson of the story. We chat about what we like and dislike about anime shows (something I’m sure we’ll return to in greater detail and specificity later).

Zack talks about Beouwulf & Grendel ( dir. Sturla Gunnarsson, 2005). I just nod since and I haven’t read the book or seen the movie.

Commando review

As promised this is our quick Commando podcast. We discuss the joys of nature (feeding deer, etc) and I reference the supreme Commando review done by The Greatest Movie EVER podcast which you can get and listen to hear (get it a pun … instead of writing here I… well if you don’t get it then screw you … but still listen okay and comment or email ian.strope@gmail.com)

"I forget the secret knock!"

Podcast 5 pt.1
I give out my top 3 errr… 2 comics (it’s been awhile since I was an avid reader and I don’t really get into that indie stuff so it’s not much). We debate the value of a Superman. What sort of stakes and drama can possibly exist for he who is nigh omnipotent. I talk about my fondness for the Bruce Timm DC animations. Then I tell an anecdote about elucidating cinematic realism by referencing the Superman vs. Mighty Mouse debate from Stand By Me (1986). I go on to make the unpopular defense that comicbook/superhero movies becoming popular in Hollywood is a “good thing”. We compare the supers with the old time action movie protagonists who had to solve their problems with guns or fists or their wits.

“Mighty Mouse is just a cartoon, Superman is a real guy.”

Podcast 5 pt. 2
In Part 2 we continue to discuss these problem solving skills as they relate to the Rambo IV trailer and John Carpenter’s Apocalypse Trilogy (which includes The Thing (1982), Prince of Darkness (1987), and In the Mouth of Madness (1995).) We talk about Carpenter’s affective use of claustrophobic elements to create fear. Then we briefly mention something about Commando (1985) … but that’s a podcast for a different time. If you want to talk to the futile podcasters just send your emails or mp3 voicemail to ian.strope@gmail.com

Podcast 4

We start off discussing the narrative superiority of 80’s music including the Ice House tape I have in my car. We move on to mention Enjoyably bad movies such as Showdown in Little Tokyo (dir. M. Lester,1991) which features Yakuza guy but not Uzi guy or Drug Dealer Guy. We cover decapitating sluts and the shift of more recent movies to PG-13 (Av.P’d). Then for some reason I bring up the David Mamet’s The Unit which had an awesome season 2 cliffhanger.

Podcast4 pt. 2

Part 2 covers Total Recall as one of Zack’s favorite movies (mainly since Ronny Cox is awesome and loves cornflakes).

Then we get into how Socialism is bad since it helps fund Uwe Boll movies like Blood Rayne (2005). We close by discussing Steven Seagal and that“insufferable scowl.”
