We debate the value of a Superman. What sort of stakes and drama can possibly exist for he who is nigh omnipotent. I talk about my fondness for the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bruce_Timm\">Bruce <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\">Timm<\/span><\/a> DC animations.   Then I tell an anecdote about <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\">elucidating<\/span> cinematic <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Realism_%28arts%29\">realism<\/a>  by referencing the Superman vs. Mighty Mouse  debate from <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Stand By Me (1986).   <\/span>I go on to make the unpopular defense that <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\">comicbook<\/span>\/superhero movies becoming popular in Hollywood is a &#8220;good thing&#8221;. We compare the supers with the old time action movie protagonists who had to solve their problems with guns or fists or their wits.<\/p>\n<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/www.granateseed.com\/futilepodcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/699_0.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.granateseed.com\/futilepodcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/699_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5104294929168666162\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Mighty Mouse is just a cartoon, Superman is a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">real<\/span> guy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.granateseed.com\/podcasts\/podcast_5_pt._2.mp3\">Podcast 5 pt. 2<\/a><br \/>In Part 2 we continue to discuss these problem solving skills as they relate to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jul2u640a4s\">Rambo  IV trailer<\/a> and John Carpenter&#8217;s Apocalypse Trilogy (which includes <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Thing (1982)<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Prince of Darkness<\/span> (1987), and <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">In the Mouth of Madness (1995)<\/span>.) We talk about Carpenter&#8217;s affective use of claustrophobic elements to create fear. Then we briefly mention something about <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Commando<\/span> (1985) &#8230; but that&#8217;s a podcast for a different time.
